Marham in 2005/6
11th March 2006

Soon to be the only RAF fast jet airfield in East Anglia (would we have believed that twenty years ago!), Marham is a large airfield and it's future appears to be largely secure due to the bases forthcoming role as a major 'hub' for Tornado operations and servicing. The 24 approach is quite good for photographs although the rest of the field is difficult at best and the base does not like photographers down on the perimeter fence. Still, with some planning (and luck) good results can be obtained.

A little bit of sun crept through. This 2 Squadron jet was the first one I'd photographed at Marham with the new, dreaded coding system on the fin. The numbers are ok (although a silly waste of time/money as the aircraft already carry a airframe specific serial), but it's the planned removal of all squadron markings that is such a short sighted move, although like so many times recently, it probably won't last very long anyway.
