Wattisham open day 2005 & visit to Ipswich by HMS Grafton.

Aircraft is loaded with a Sea Skua anti-ship missile, and a old fashioned depth charge is on display alongside the more normal anti-submarine weapon of choice, the Stingray torpedo. 1200x800 Grafton.16.jpg 2005-07-10 10:32:00 |
Taken from the bow and looking back, Vickers Mk8 4.5 inch gun dominates. Notice the ships crest on the barrel cap. 1200x800 Grafton.14.jpg 2005-07-10 10:48:00 |
From the bridge and looking forward, 32 vertical launch tubes for Sea Wolf Surface-to-air missiles. It's still not known if this system will be released to the Chilean's. 1200x800 Grafton.14.1.jpg 2005-07-10 11:02:00 |
Leaving after the visit, Grafton passes under the Orwell bridge. 1200x800 Grafton.11.jpg 2005-07-13 16:10:00 |
Would have been a interesting photo from the DHL lorry! 1200x800 Grafton.12.jpg 2005-07-13 16:11:00 |
Passing the onlookers, Grafton heads for the sea. 1200x800 Grafton.13.jpg 2005-07-13 16:13:00 |
ZJ184 was the static Apache on the apron, with a load of demonstration rockets and Hellfire missiles. 1200x800 open_day.1.jpg 2005-07-23 10:33:59 |
Nose on, the TADS sighting system can be seen clearly, as in flight it's usually rotated inward for protection. 1200x800 open_day.3.jpg 2005-07-23 10:37:43 |
A suprise was the static appearance of the Bf 109E that the locally based Hawker Restorations have been rebuilding to flying condition. 1200x800 openday.4.jpg 2005-07-23 10:44:38 |
The airframe is powered by a genuine Damiler-Benz 601A engine. 1200x800 openday.5.jpg 2005-07-23 10:44:55 |
The Suffolk Police Air Support Unit are the other major flying unit operating from Wattisham with their EC.135 which is usually tucked away in it's HAS when not operating. 1200x800 openday.9.jpg 2005-07-23 10:46:06 |
In the hangar were several Apache's on display, in various configurations. This one minus a burnt out and very expensive Longbow radar! 1200x800 openday.10.jpg 2005-07-23 11:18:43 |
The four fuel tank ferry loadout has yet to fly in UK service, although common overseas. 1200x800 openday.11.jpg 2005-07-23 11:23:45 |
Caroline Grace and her two-seat Spitfire are well known on the UK airshow circuit, but rarely this close. Caroline is the only qualified female Spitfire display pilot in the world. 1200x800 openday.7.jpg 2005-07-23 11:45:26 |
Somebody had the foresight to park her ML407 besides the 109E - a little piece of planning that often gets overlooked at airshows. 1200x800 openday.8.jpg 2005-07-23 11:48:45 |
Low down angle with rockets and Hellfires displayed infront. 1200x800 openday.13.jpg 2005-07-23 12:22:48 |
Shows the 30mm cannon and ammunition well. 1200x800 open_day.2.jpg 2006-03-10 23:46:16 |
At the time the aircraft was still unflown and was doubtful to do so prior to shipping to its US buyer - damn! 1200x800 openday.6.jpg 2006-03-11 10:02:29 |
The open day was a rare chance for the public to get close to the WAH-64D. Much criticised by the UK press, it surely is too much to expect for them to comprehend that the aircraft itself is excellent, the usual MoD procurement mis-management is where the fault for the bad press lies. 1200x800 openday.12.jpg 2006-03-11 10:45:09 |
