Further Mildenhall photo's from 2007.
Another cold saturday morning on the mound. McConnell based KC-135 on finals. 1200x800 IMG_3426.jpg 2007-01-20 12:12:00 |
On final approach in the clear skies. 1200x800 IMG_3431.jpg 2007-01-20 12:12:00 |
The heavy winds during the week were still causing problems and a number of aircraft made late missed approaches. 1200x800 IMG_3437.jpg 2007-01-20 12:44:00 |
Resident 100th ARW '135 on the 23 approach. 1200x800 IMG_3451.jpg 2007-01-20 12:54:00 |
A few seconds later. 1200x800 IMG_3454.jpg 2007-01-20 12:54:00 |
The next tanker landing caught windshear and the left wing dropped... 1200x800 IMG_3458.jpg 2007-01-20 13:00:00 |
....followed by the right, the crew reported a large drop in airspeed. 1200x800 IMG_3462.jpg 2007-01-20 13:00:00 |
Second approach was better. 1200x800 IMG_3467.jpg 2007-01-20 13:00:00 |
Another 100th ARW tanker landing, the third on that Saturday morning. 1200x800 IMG_3483.jpg 2007-01-20 14:08:00 |
First of the three to go. Rumour has it they swapped runways because the army of photographers who had gathered that saturday morning expected a 29 departure like their accompanying tanker. 1200x800 IMG_3540.jpg 2007-02-03 11:57:00 |
The second of the trio was a two-seat F-16D model. Like some other recent export sales, the Polish twin sticks have a enlarged spine for a increased electronic warfare role. 1200x800 IMG_3552.jpg 2007-02-03 11:58:05 |
The spine can be seen clearer here. In hindsight I think I preferred the take-off from the other end as they were still quite low when went past us. Makes you wonder why they bothered to play games as Mildenhall should know by now they are not going to intimidate enthusiasts. 1200x800 IMG_3555.jpg 2007-02-03 11:58:07 |
The final Viper on departure. I shot about 20 on each climb out yet only a couple had the aircraft full frame and sharp - they came off fast! 1200x800 IMG_3560.jpg 2007-02-03 11:58:20 |
The nearest shot before I lost them. The smaller pod is not a fuel tank but a baggage pod for the pilots gear. 1200x800 IMG_3562.jpg 2007-02-03 11:58:21 |
Ohio Air National Guard KC-135R arriving at Mildenhall. It appears to carry a badge on the forward fuselage. 1200x800 IMG_3614.jpg 2007-02-17 10:49:48 |
A little while later another tanker on the 29 approach. 1200x800 IMG_3620.jpg 2007-02-17 10:53:13 |
Yet another McConnell AFB jet. 1200x800 IMG_3629.jpg 2007-02-17 10:53:17 |
100th ARW tanker turning onto 29 on a friday afternoon. 1200x800 IMG_3730.jpg 2007-03-02 13:55:08 |
One of two tankers on the circuit. The weather was variable. 1200x800 IMG_3748.jpg 2007-03-02 13:57:08 |
On approach. 1200x800 IMG_3754.jpg 2007-03-02 14:12:59 |
All current 100th ARW tankers carry nose art. Until recently, each airframe carried a different badge but now all show the same. 1200x800 IMG_3758.jpg 2007-03-02 14:13:02 |
Another C-17 Globemaster arriving from its trip across the Atlantic. This one is from the 62nd AW at McChord AFB. 1200x800 IMG_3768.jpg 2007-03-02 14:37:08 |
Rather than being shot from the mound, this was shot from the roadside in Mildenhall town as it turned up unexpected. 1200x800 IMG_3769.jpg 2007-03-02 14:37:08 |
A rare opportunity to catch a C-5 Galaxy, in this case a C-5B from Travis AFB. 1200x800 IMG_3900.jpg 2007-03-09 14:28:23 |
Grand Forks based KC-135R inbound on another friday afternoon. 1200x800 IMG_3876.jpg 2007-03-09 14:52:55 |
This is another jet with wing tip mounted drogue pods. 1200x800 IMG_3890.jpg 2007-03-09 14:53:01 |
He was actually a emergency divert and landed on three engines after departing Germany. 1200x800 IMG_39000.jpg 2007-03-09 15:32:28 |
Another Special Operation Group MC-130 in the circuit. 1200x800 IMG_3911.jpg 2007-03-09 15:54:40 |
C-21 Learjet based in Germany with a smart tail stripe. 1200x800 IMG_3927.jpg 2007-03-09 16:23:16 |
This KC-135R is from the Seymour-Johnson based reserve unit. Back in 1996 I visited this unit as it was forming. Note the 'First in flight' tail stripe honouring the Wright Brothers flight in North Carolina. 1200x800 IMG_3939.jpg 2007-03-10 09:59:29 |
Air National Guard C-130 turning onto runway 29 at Mildenhall. Shot from the far side at long distance - hence the stopped props. 1200x800 IMG_3959.jpg 2007-03-10 10:26:47 |
Canadair Challenger on approach into Mildenhall. 1200x800 IMG_3976.jpg 2007-03-16 14:45:30 |
This is a Federal Aviation Administration aircraft and carries very restrained markings. The FAA is the American equivalent of our own CAA. 1200x800 IMG_3980.jpg 2007-03-16 14:45:32 |
It was believed the aircraft was in the UK for calibration of the USAF bases landing aids and had been to Fairford that afternoon. 1200x800 IMG_3984.jpg 2007-03-16 14:45:34 |
Second time I've caught this 100th ARW tanker inside a month. Don't they fly any others....? 1200x800 IMG_3988.jpg 2007-03-16 14:51:55 |
Another visiting C-130 on the way home. 1200x800 IMG_3992.jpg 2007-03-16 15:04:53 |
Turkish Air Force C-130 inbound to Mildenhall late on a sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the sun was right at the six o'clock position so the angles are not good. 1200x800 IMG_4030.jpg 2007-03-25 17:27:34 |
Another C-17 inbound to Mildenhall. 1200x800 IMG_46331.jpg 2007-04-07 10:49:33 |
A McChord based Globemaster this time. 1200x800 IMG_46332.jpg 2007-04-07 11:53:54 |
One of several 100th ARW tankers on the circuit at Mildenhall on a misty friday afternoon. 1200x800 IMG_4703.jpg 2007-04-13 13:52:13 |
The next one, at one point there was five KC-135R's in the circuit. 1200x800 IMG_4706.jpg 2007-04-13 13:55:02 |
And the next one! 1200x800 IMG_4714.jpg 2007-04-13 14:04:28 |
Finally! The 100th's flagship finally caught in some sun. 1200x800 IMG_4718.jpg 2007-04-13 14:14:23 |
A close up of the fin showing the extra markings. Note the matching serial. 1200x800 IMG_4735.jpg 2007-04-13 15:07:23 |
Following morning and a MacDill based tanker arriving on the 29 approach. 1200x800 IMG_4745.jpg 2007-04-14 09:51:20 |
A very lucky catch, although I didn't know it at the time. A USN P-3C orion arriving a short time later. The underslung pod was a unknown at the time. 1200x800 IMG_4754.jpg 2007-04-14 10:28:07 |
New 100th ARW tanker in shortly afterwards. 1200x800 IMG_3732.jpg 2007-04-14 11:17:17 |
The same Orion departing later after a quick refuel. The pod is known as a Littoral Surveillance Radar System. 1200x800 IMG_4761.jpg 2007-04-14 12:52:30 |
Apparently this was the first time a Orion had been photographed outside the US fitted with the pod. The pods had been seen fitted to rare, unmarked civilian operated Orions out of Dallas Love Field in the USA. Stories circulate these are actually operated by the CIA. 1200x800 IMG_4767.jpg 2007-04-14 12:52:33 |
At first it was thought the markings were bogus but now it is believed this is the real USN Orion 161132. 1200x800 IMG_4771.jpg 2007-04-14 12:52:35 |
352nd SOG MC-130P on the overshoot from the mound at the 29 end. 1200x800 IMG_8357.jpg 2007-08-10 14:24:06 |
With the other main C-130 variant flown by the unit, the MC-130H not far behind. 1200x800 IMG_8374.jpg 2007-08-10 15:15:21 |
Tight turn onto 29. 1200x800 IMG_8383.jpg 2007-08-10 15:19:06 |
92nd ARW tanker coming in on a 'Reach' transport flight. As well as tanking, many KC-135R/Ts conduct transatlantic transport flights. 1200x800 IMG_8390.jpg 2007-08-10 15:21:43 |
More KC-135s arrive at Milenhall on these missions than dedicated C-17/C-5 transport aircraft. 1200x800 IMG_8395.jpg 2007-08-10 15:21:45 |
Travis AFB based C-17A arriving late in the afternoon. Is still carrying the 'lets roll' dedication on the nose for 9.11 which was originally applied to one aircraft from every USAF unit. 1200x800 IMG_4597.jpg 2007-08-10 18:09:51 |
Globemaster was bringing in the NASA support for the following WB-57 that was expected. 1200x800 IMG_4602.jpg 2007-08-10 18:09:53 |
Finally, the NASA WB-57 which was making it's third visit in three years. The high profile tail markings had been removed leading to much speculation as to the reason for it's visit. 1200x800 IMG_8416.jpg 2007-08-10 18:25:32 |
Taken at maximum zoom, down the runway - the aircraft's massive wingspan is clearly evident. 1200x800 IMG_8422.jpg 2007-08-10 18:25:38 |
Five MH-53M Pave Low's landing back at Mildenhall at the end of their farewell flight. 1200x800 IMG_9370.jpg 2007-09-13 15:24:48 |
A tradition from the airlines, base fire services giving the aircraft a water arch as they taxi in from their final flight. 1200x800 IMG_9382.jpg 2007-09-13 15:27:17 |
The 21st Special Operation's Squadron break towards the camera at the end of their 'Dover tour' and farewell flight. Under various unit designations, H-53's have operated in the UK for 27 years. 1200x800 IMG_4623.jpg 2007-09-13 15:30:17 |
351st ARS in the circuit. Usually a sign it's going to be quiet. 1200x800 IMG_9955.jpg 2007-10-19 13:33:19 |
A long wait on a chilly afternoon, but the RC-135U finally arrived in the sun. 1200x800 IMG_9971.jpg 2007-10-19 14:45:01 |
With their glossy finish, white tops and various lumps and bumps, these always look good in the light. 1200x800 IMG_4747.jpg 2007-10-19 14:52:01 |
